Château Angludet
This is Daisy Sichel. She’s the seventh generation of the Sichel family, proprietors of Château Angludet in Margaux, and she’s part of a generation of wine producers championing innovative and sustainable practices in the region. I had the pleasure of meeting her and learning about her family’s wines during a recent visit with WiSP Bordeaux.
Her grandparents purchased Château Angludet in 1961 and dedicated their lives to restoring the vines and surrounding land. Sixty years later, the Sichel family still lives and works the property, with the entire family involved in the business. It’s a beautiful vineyard— 30 hectares, lined by a steam and forest, a truly unique environment for the vines.
We learned about her family’s commitment to biodiversity, which they have been practicing for over 20 years under her uncle Benjamin Sichel’s leadership. Balance is the name of the game here, and they carefully study the natural environment, from cover crops to fauna in the surrounding forests, to ensure a diverse and harmonious growing environment for their vines.
The result is wines with emotion and vibrancy, expressing the family’s philosophy that each vintage’s individual personality and their unique terroir needs to shine through in the wines. Their blending stands out for a higher percentage of Petit Verdot than is common in the region, with at least 10% in each blend and their 2021 reaching 23% Petit Verdot, adding a boost of power and depth to their wines. Starting with the 2019 vintage they introduced terracotta amphorae to their vinification practice, aging a portion of their wines in amphorae and part in French oak.
The 2012 Château Angludet was a wine of amazing complexity and finesse— a joy to discover now but still with many years of life ahead of it.
Thank you Château Angludet for welcoming us and sharing the history and philosophy behind your wines.
What a lovely way to kick-off an exciting new adventure in Bordeaux!
